Alaska Native Hospital
Ministry Head: John Carr
Start Date: December 2000
Ministry Vision Verse: “…I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick.” -Ezekiel 24:16
Mission (Goal): Villages are spread, literally, all over the vast “last frontier” of Alaska, the majority of which can only be reached by air plane or boat – that is, if the rivers are not frozen for the winter. With rural Alaska being so remote and hard to reach, a ministry as the Native Hospital becomes a much needed ministry. The hospital gives us a hub and vital link to contacts reaching out to the villages by way of Yukon River mission trips, the air plane village ministry, and the RAM ministry.
It is the prayer of those involved in this ministry that number one, souls would be saved and lives changed for the glory of God. We don’t want it to stop there, however, we want to see souls encouraged, discipled, and our young people trained to serve the Lord.
Impact Since Start: In December of 2000, we started the ministry by conducting room-to-room visits. God blessed and in May of 2001, He opened the door to a weekly, 2-hour time slot, every Sunday afternoon (1:00-3:00 in conference room #2), in which to hold church services.
Since the beginning, we have seen many souls come to know Christ as Savior, along with the distribution of thousands of Gospel tracts. I remember one man who picked up a gospel track in the lobby, whom we visited about a half-hour later. When asked if he knew he would go to Heaven when he died, he replied, “Nobody ever asked me that question before, but I want to go to heaven!” Minutes later, he was weeping as he received Christ as his personal Savior. There have been phone calls in the middle of the night, where I was called to the bedside of a dying relative. Another family on the verge of divorce was encouraged to reconcile their marriage, in which they did. Yet others have been comforted during a critical time in their life or a deep time of grief and despair.
In addition to the patient and family outreach, the ministry has developed into a training ground for many young people in our church. Each week, several young people join in and help out in the service by setting up for services, handing out Gospel tracts, singing specials, and our young men are given the opportunity to preach a short sermon. This has brought the ministry to fruition by not only reaching out, but reproducing; as should be the goal of any ministry.
Difficulties To Deal With: Please pray for this ministry, as we have, many times, a very small window of opportunity to take a Bible and reach people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, showing them how they can be saved from eternal death and receive eternal life. Many have not heard of the saving grace of God, as the traditions of men hold them in bondage. “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.” -Colossians 2:8 Pray that the Holy Spirit of God would have free-reign among the Native people and open their eyes to the truth of Jesus Christ and his shed blood on Calvary.
Special Notes (Things To Pray About): If you are a pastor or family member in Alaska, have a friend or relative hospitalized or soon to be, let us know. We would be happy to visit with the individual. As card-carrying hospital volunteers, we have access to virtually every department, including the Emergency, Intensive Care, and Pediatric units.
